Halfway through this film, the camera zooms in for a two-minute-long close-up on the protagonist watching a performance of Wagner’s opera Die Walküre (“dee val-KEE-ruh”). Alexandre Desplat’s (“day-PLAH’s”) whimsical score commences in this film’s opening shot, (15[1])in which a Steadicam tracks a man wearing a black tracksuit jogging through the snow in Central Park. Early in this film, a couple played by Peter Stormare and (*) Anne Heche (“haytch”) reluctantly attend the protagonist’s engagement. Contemporary reviews of this film criticized it for a scene in which the lead actress and a child actor seem to sit naked in a bathtub and likened it to Eyes Wide Shut, which starred the same lead actress.
